Unit of study_

COMP5416: Advanced Network Technologies

2024 unit information

The unit introduces networking concepts beyond the best effort service of the core TCP/IP protocol suite. Understanding of the fundamental issues in building an integrated multi-service network for global Internet services, taking into account service objectives, application characteristics and needs and network mechanisms will be discussed. Enables students to understand the core issues and be aware of proposed solutions so they can actively follow and participate in the development of the Internet beyond the basic bit transport service.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. understand the need for QoS management, philosophies applied to different standards today, and system solutions
  • LO2. analyse the transmission behaviour in terms of throughput and latency, and understand the differences introduced with general congestion control
  • LO3. construct networks and calculate performance metrics and dimension, according to specification
  • LO4. understand current frameworks and standards families for QoS implmentation, and realisation of queuing management
  • LO5. understand statistical concepts, probability distributions, and other theories underpinning the area of distributed systems
  • LO6. implement network protocols from scratch, according to a given specification, to carry out on a network of computers
  • LO7. analyse the results of simulation and experimental studies, and appreciate the relative merit/accuracy of obtained results.

Unit availability

This section lists the session, attendance modes and locations the unit is available in. There is a unit outline for each of the unit availabilities, which gives you information about the unit including assessment details and a schedule of weekly activities.

The outline is published 2 weeks before the first day of teaching. You can look at previous outlines for a guide to the details of a unit.
